The Waldorf Astoria Cavalieri in Rome, Italy, is a luxury property under the umbrella of the Hilton Hotel brand. On a recent award stay, utilizing the Hilton Aspire annual free-night certificate and $250 resort credit, we evaluated the Cavaleri in six categories: Check-in and service, room quality, dining options, location, décor, and overall value. Each category was assigned a grade between D (1) and A (4), and all scores were averaged to obtain an overall rating.

Check-In & Service: Upon arrival, guests are greeted by bellhops and a door attendant. The service staff is friendly and helpful. The check-in process was smooth, and a room upgrade, having Hilton Diamond status, was offered to us. Instructions regarding the restaurants, pools, and details of the complimentary breakfast were clear and helpful. Grade: A

Room Quality: The upgraded room with a pool view was beautiful. A small balcony provided a magnificent view of the city from the highest point in Rome. The room décor was exquisite, and the marble bathroom was the very image of luxury. The room was moderately sized but had a comfortable sitting area with a couch, desk, and television. Grade: A

Dining Options: The Cavalieri has two dining establishments, including Italy’s best Michelin-star restaurant, a separate poolside restaurant, and a main-floor bar. We ate at the bottom-floor restaurant by the pool and enjoyed upscale Italian cuisine. The waitstaff was professional and friendly, and the food and drink were exceptional. Grade: A

Location: The Rome Cavalieri Hotel is located on the city’s highest hill and offers magnificent views but is a long taxi ride from the tourist destinations of the old city center. Guests should expect to pay for a taxi or Uber and plan a 20–30-minute commute to the Vatican, Colosseum, or Spanish Steps. Grade: C

Décor: The Waldorf Astoria Cavalieri displays magnificent artwork throughout the hotel. The entire property is classy and upscale, and the rooms are the very definition of elegance. Grade: A

Overall Value: Although the Cavalieri is a top-tier, elegant hotel with room rates between $300 and $600 per night, which is more than reasonable for a luxury property, the location is somewhat of a downside for vacationers hoping to enjoy the sites of the ancient city. Grade: B

FINAL GRADE: A- (3.5)
